# Privacy and security

> Understand how OverControl Chat stores conversations, handles attachments, and applies retention and deletion.

[OverControl Chat](https://chat.overcontrolgroup.com) saves conversations so you can return to your work. Access to saved conversations and attachments is tied to your signed-in account. Connections between your browser and Chat use HTTPS.

This guide covers Chat. An individual developer API request and a file uploaded through the Files API have separate data-handling behavior.

## Saved conversations

Chat stores your messages and the model's responses to support conversation history and follow-up questions. Relevant conversation content and attachments are processed to generate answers.

Closing the browser, signing out, or starting a new conversation does not delete an earlier chat. You can reopen saved conversations from the sidebar while they remain available.

Chat is not a zero-retention service. It currently applies a **30-day retention period** to conversations, messages, and attachments. Expiry is handled separately for these items. Continuing a conversation can update its expiry without preserving every older message or attachment indefinitely.

> [!TIP]
>
> Keep your own copy of important work. Chat history and uploaded files are not permanent storage.

## Delete a conversation

Open the conversation's options menu, choose **Delete**, and confirm. This removes the conversation and initiates cleanup of its messages.

Archiving a conversation, if you use that action, only changes how it appears in your history. It does not delete it or bypass retention.

Deleting a chat does not guarantee that every uploaded file is immediately removed. Manage stored attachments separately when you want to delete the uploads as well.

## Attachments

Chat stores supported uploads so they can be used in your conversation. Images are processed as image input when you use Vision. Text documents and PDFs are processed through text extraction.

Attachments have their own retention deadlines. When a file expires, it becomes unavailable and is scheduled for cleanup. Background cleanup can take time; expiry is not a promise that every stored copy disappears at the exact same instant.

To manage stored uploads:

1. Open **Settings** and find **Manage Files** under the data controls.
2. Select **Manage** to view your files.
3. Delete the files you no longer need.

Removing a file from an unsent message is different from deleting a stored upload. Deleting a file can also make it unavailable to conversations that reference it.

The [Files and images guide](https://docs.overcontrolgroup.com/chat/files-and-images.md) lists supported formats and limits. Files uploaded through the developer API are separate from Chat attachments and follow the [Files API's deletion and expiry rules](https://docs.overcontrolgroup.com/files/managing-files.md).

## Account and service data

Conversation retention is separate from account records, authentication, usage and billing records, and technical information needed to operate and secure the service. Deleting an individual chat does not delete your account or those records.

For account data requests, cookies, service providers, and your rights, consult the [Privacy Policy](https://overcontrolgroup.com/legal/privacy-policy). The [Terms of Service](https://overcontrolgroup.com/legal/terms-of-service) describe the terms for using OverControl.

## Frequently asked questions

> [accordion] Are my conversations stored?
>
> Yes. Chat saves messages and responses for conversation history and follow-ups, subject to its current 30-day retention period.

> [accordion] Does closing Chat delete a conversation?
>
> No. Closing a browser tab or signing out does not delete saved conversations or attachments. Use the deletion controls or allow their retention periods to expire.

> [accordion] Does deleting a conversation delete all its files immediately?
>
> No immediate deletion of every upload is guaranteed by that action. Manage stored files separately in Settings. Attachments also have their own automatic expiry and cleanup.

> [accordion] Is Chat retention the same as API file retention?
>
> No. Chat attachments and Files API uploads are separate. API uploads remain until deleted or until an expiry configured for that upload passes.
